Let this be that;
The Legislative arm finally completed the amendment process to the constitution which started with the past administration. The constitution amendment procedure which has dragged on for over a year has finally been presented to the president for assent.In addition to some changes made by the previous legislative council, notable changes to the constitution by the present House include;
-Removal of the post of Internal Auditor to take effect from the next administration.
-more provisions to enhance the performance of the chamber system
-introduction of the position of Chief of Staff
-provision for an independent ad-hoc auditing committee to ensure better accountability.
Furthermore, the Legislative council has ensured better accountability by the executive. In the course of the semester, the house received reports on statement of accounts, received and went through the chamber allocation as well as a review of the entire budget for the chamber week.
In fulfilling its primary function of law making, the legislative arm in a unanimous decision has decided to make regulations to guide the conduct of elections in the college as well as pre- and post election events. Thus, a committee has been set up which consists of ALSSEC members and Law Students from 200level to 500level to come up with a bill and present before the house by the end of March.
The semester
started with the legislative arm screening Judges and other appointees of the
LSS
The Legislative arm
also through a letter and a series of negotiations with the College proposed a
relaxation of the dress code to allow for grey colored jackets, striped
trousers, black gowns as well as braided hair for ladies in line with the
belief of being 21st century law students. Unfortunately, the proposal was
rejected.
For the second
semester;
In the course of the first semester, it has been noticed
that some LSS officials have not performed either partially or totally their
constitutional functions. To this end, the house through its oversight and
disciplinary committee would summon such officials.
Also, the House would provide the new constitution both in
pdf formats and printed documents, to take effect before the law week.
Also, the ALSSEC Act would be passed into law before the
next election in May.
